The Dallas Cowboys is a professional American football team based in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. The team is a member of the National Football League (NFL) and plays in the NFC East division. The Cowboys joined the NFL as an expansion team in 1960. The team's national following might best be represented by its NFL record of consecutive sell-outs. The Cowboys' streak of 190 consecutive sold-out regular and post-season games (home and away) began in 2002. The franchise has made it to the Super Bowl eight times, tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Denver Broncos for the second most Super Bowl appearances in history, just behind the New England Patriots record for eleven Super Bowl appearances. This success has been led by a number of iconic players such as quarterback Roger Staubach, defensive end Ed "Too Tall" Jones, and wide receiver Michael Irvin.

The Cowboys have had a storied history, with many of the team's players, coaches, and owners becoming cultural icons in the city of Dallas and across the United States. The team has also been the subject of numerous films, books, and television shows, further cementing its place in popular culture.

One of the most iconic figures in Cowboys history is Tom Landry, the team's head coach from 1960 to 1988. Landry is widely considered one of the greatest coaches in NFL history, leading the Cowboys to 20 consecutive winning seasons, 13 division titles, and two Super Bowl victories. Landry's innovative "flex defense" was a major contributor to the team's success during this period.

The Cowboys of the 1990s were led by quarterback Troy Aikman, running back Emmitt Smith, and wide receiver Michael Irvin, also known as "The Triplets." Under head coach Jimmy Johnson, the team won three Super Bowls in four years and became one of the most dominant teams in NFL history.

The team struggled in the 2000s, failing to make the playoffs for the better part of a decade. However, the Cowboys returned to form in the 2010s under head coach Jason Garrett and quarterback Tony Romo. The team made the playoffs several times during this period, but ultimately fell short of winning a Super Bowl.

The 2020 season was the first season under Mike McCarthy as head coach and the team finished with a 6-10 record, missing the playoffs for the 6th straight season.

In the 2021 draft, the cowboys selected Micah Parsons, a Linebacker from Penn State as their first-round pick, which was considered one of the best picks in the draft.

The Dallas Cowboys are one of the most recognizable and popular sports franchises in the world, with a fan base that stretches across the United States and around the globe. Despite the team's ups and downs over the years, the Cowboys continue to be a major force in the NFL and a beloved part of American culture.
